What is a Sublimation Transfer?

Sublimation transfer is a printing process that uses heat to transfer dye onto materials such as:

  • Polyester-based fabrics (t-shirts, jerseys, leggings)
  • Hard goods with a poly-coating (mugs, keychains, puzzles, etc.)

The design is first printed with sublimation ink onto special sublimation paper. When heat and pressure are applied using a heat press, the ink turns into a gas and bonds at the molecular level with the surface—resulting in a permanent, full-color image that won't crack, peel, or fade.

  • Benefits of Sublimation Transfers

Vibrant Colors – Produces bold, photo-quality designs with rich gradients and detail.

No Feel to the Touch – The ink fuses into the fabric, so there's no additional layer on top.

    Long-Lasting – Designs are wash-proof, scratch-resistant, and won’t peel like vinyl.

Ideal for Small Runs – Perfect for custom, one-off prints or short batches.

Versatile for Hard Surfaces – Works on mugs, mouse pads, coasters, and more with a poly coating.

  • Limitations to Consider

Fabric Compatibility – Sublimation only works on white or light-colored polyester (or poly-coated) materials.

Not for Cotton – Sublimation ink does not bond with natural fibers like cotton.

Color Matters – Sublimation doesn’t print white ink; white areas in your design will show as the fabric’s color.

Who Uses Sublimation Transfers?

Sublimation transfers are widely used by:

  • Apparel brands – for vibrant prints on polyester garments.
  • Gift & promo businesses – to customize mugs, keychains, and more.
  • Print shops – offering short-run, full-color options.
  • Online sellers – creating personalized, made-to-order products.

It’s a go-to method for anyone needing durable, high-quality prints on poly-based materials.
